Born Los Altos, California
Julie Packard has dedicated her career to conserving the oceans. Trained as a marine biologist, she helped found California’s world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium in the late 1970s. Since 1984, she has served as its executive director. Under Packard’s leadership, the aquarium educates the public about key threats to the world’s oceans—including overfishing and ocean plastics—and about the ocean’s role in mitigating climate change. The aquarium’s popular Seafood Watch program, begun in 1999, provides consumers with science-based recommendations for ocean-friendly seafood choices. It expanded to impact production as well, working directly with seafood producers, governments, and other partners to fight overfishing and to advocate for sustainable fishery management.
For Packard, the ocean is a central—though overlooked—component of global health. She explains, “We depend on it for so much. The good news is that the ocean is resilient. It can recover if we act quickly.”
